What to Wear to your Fall or Winter Portrait Session | Denton County Photographer

Every fall/winter it begins again... my clients rushing to call and book their family portraits in enough time to design and mail holiday cards. The two most frequent questions I get are: "Where are we going to take our pictures this year" and "What do we wear?"

I am emphatically opposed to the matchy-matchy looks of the 90's. You know... everyone in white button ups and jeans, or everyone in black tshirts and jeans... or the other variations of the entire family wearing the exact same outfit. Where is the personality? Where is the color? Do you really want to look like one big blob of white and denim? No. I promise. You don't.

For the past couple years I've stressed the importance of coordination but not matchy-matchy outfits to the families I photograph. However, some of my clients still get stressed at the idea of picking out the right clothes for each member of the family and having it not only look good, but reflect each individual style while maintaining comfort and confidence.

So I put together a few tips before you go hunting in the closet or the department store to piece together the perfect family ensemble. And since I am a bit obsessed with lists, of course it's in a list form:

1. Coordinate - do not try to "match"... the days of all black or white tshirts with jeans are long over. Please choose outfits that reflect each person's individual personality and don't be afraid to mix texture, color and prints. Think clothes that coordinate, not match. For example, everyone in dressy more formal fabrics but different colors... some in pants and some in skirts/dresses. Or everyone wearing winter wear (coats, scarves, hats) but each one different and unique.
2. Layers - Speaking of hats and scarves, fall is the perfect time of year to layer your clothes. It adds texture, and also gives you more options of different looks without the hassle of changing outfits.
3. Shoes - comfort verses fashion... the age old dilemma. Do pay attention to shoes, as they will end up in some of your poses ... heels are GREAT, if you know how to wear them and feel comfortable. If you really want heels, but your location isn't ideal for them, bring some comfy shoes to walk around in and change into the heels during poses.
4. Pants - make sure they are long enough, because if they aren't, your socks and shoes will look funny. Unless they are cropped pants, capris or shorts, they should hit mid-way down your shoe or longer.
5. Socks - speaking of seeing your socks... when you sit down, we might see them. Choose accordingly.
6. Hats/Scarves/Jewelry - GREAT way to change a look. Just be careful not to wear ALL three. Then you will look overdone. Pick one or two and then keep everything else more subtle. One dramatic accessory can go a long way towards stating your style. Too many, and you will get lost in your outfit.
7. Logos/Prints - Avoid anything with logos, graphics, characters or labels of any kind. These will distract the viewer from the primary subject of the photo (YOU) and will date the image.
8. Color - choose one or two people in your family to be the splash of color. Have them wear a bold colored scarf, or shoes or shirt. Dress everyone else neutrally with maybe small accents of that bold color. It will coordinate but also provide personality and interest.

9. Comfort - Now isn’t the time to break in new shoes or wear anything tight or constricting. If you’re not comfortable, it will show in the images. Pick clothing that accentuate your best feature or make you feel good.
10. Hair - always get your hair cut and/or colored at least a week before your session, that way if it's the wrong color or needs to settle some, there is time and you don't look too overdone.

I hope these tips helped you as you get ready for your family session in the next week or so.  Trust me, I stress over it as much as you do.  But don't feel like you need to go out and buy all new stuff.  Sometimes the perfect outfit is right in your closet, or in my case, in your sister's closet (ha... I borrowed the dress in our family portraits from my sister... finally payback for years of her raiding my closet).  Everyone in our pictures had these outfits in their closets (or borrowed it, like me).  Nothing was new.  I didn't spending any of our holiday budget to come up with new outfits.
My daughter wore a shirt of mine that I never wear with my tall black boots, my oldest son wore a sweater he got last year but wore with a different combination of pants and shirt for our family holiday dinner.  The youngest is in a shirt handed down from a friend, jeans from last year and a sweater vest my mom picked up for him from a thrift store.  My husband is wearing his standard button up that he wears to work with his best jeans and boots.  The dress I am wearing was borrowed and my shoes and belt are several years old but I hadn't wore them in a while.  No one person saw our outfits and said "I've seen that before".   (Well except my sister, but she doesn't count).  And we got TONS of compliments on our coordinating (NOT matching) outfits.  Not to mention, we were comfortable, felt confident in what we were wearing and the outfits reflected our own personal style.

Whatever you wear... have FUN and create MEMORIES.  Don't let the idea of family portraits stress you out or cause you and your husband to argue or yell at the kids.  If you smile, have fun and enjoy this moment together, it WILL show in your images.  And you will treasure them for years to come.

W Family Sneak Peak - Denton County Photographer

As a photographer, there are three things that make a session perfect: attractive and engaging subjects, beautiful backgrounds and scrumptious lighting. When I headed to this family's home to take a portrait session last week, all the stars aligned and I had all three.

Enjoy your sneak peak Jodi --- and thank you for letting me have so much fun at your gorgeous home with your family. The rest of your gallery will be ready within the next day or so.

Miss Carter BLOGGED - Denton County Custom Photographer

A few days ago I shared a sneak peak from a fun outdoor tea party with Miss Carter. I just couldn't resist sharing a few more from this sweet shoot. A real Texas Princess, Carter hammed it up for the camera and had the most genuine and engaging smiles. Just looking at these make me wish I was a little girl again too.

Thank you for letting me capture your 5th birthday portraits. Keep being the sweet little lady you are today.

Handsome Senior and Future Pilot

What a great session I had with Drew a couple weeks ago. He's handsome, smart, articulate and charming --- all great traits to have as he heads off to the Air Force Academy in the fall. We enjoyed some time around Grapevine, at the railroad tracks and then in Historic Grapevine. I was happy to include his parents and sister in a few of the shots as well. My fiance and his dad had a good time getting to know each other before the session as they are both pilots. They were a lovely family to work with and I hope they let me do it again sometime. Congrats Drew and have a great summer!

Senior Session l

Last week was a fun week for me, because I got to shoot a couple last minute senior sessions --- and both were guys (any surprise that a guy is late to get his senior portraits done? didn't think so... ha!).

My first shoot was a gorgeous estate in Denton County with one handsome senior. I am guessing there are more than a few broken hearts in his path, and if not, there soon will be.

And it was a ton of fun to include his best furry friend in some of the shots as well. Who said photographing pets is hard? Easy peazy! (or atleast I am trying to make it LOOK easy here).

Stay tuned... another gorgeous senior is coming up... and his stunning sister and parents. Off to do more post production editing. Thanks for looking!

If you are a 2011 Senior, I am accepting applications for my 2011 Senior Rep program --- give me a call if you are interested. Have a blessed day everyone.

Let's talk about Copyrights

Before I was a "photographer"... I was just another mom wanting to share great pics of her kids with family and friends. I scanned my free 8x10 from Picture People and emailed it to friends and family and even used some of them to scrapbook or make greeting cards for the holidays. They were pictures of MY kids... so I had the right to do that, right? No. I was actually breaking copyright laws. Unfortunately I didn't know that, and there isn't much I can do about it now.

Now I take photography and portraiture very seriously and want to preserve the rights of artists like myself and thought I'd use my blog to help everyone understand copyright in regards to photography.

So grab a cup of coffee and let's discuss, shall we?

What is copyright?

The U.S. Constitution and the Federal Copyright Act give “copyright” protection to “authors” for their “original works,” such as photographs.

What does that mean?

Simply that the law protects the original works and gives the exclusive rights to reproduce them to the author. When the copyright has been violated, the author can pursue legal action and the offender can be held liable and fined.

So, what are the rules regarding the prints I purchased from my professional photographer?

Here are just a few examples of things that you may not do with your professional photos:

* Scan them – for any reason
* Copy them
* Reprint them
* Crop watermarks out of photos and re-post them on the web
* Edit them – in any way
* Take pictures of your printed professional photos (especially with your cell phone) and post them on the web. (THIS LOOKS REALLY BAD PEEPS!)

What do you mean I can’t I scan them? The photos are of me and my family right?

While the photos might be of you, they are not yours. The images belong to your professional photographer; who owns the copyright. Granted you may have purchased a print of the image, and you are encouraged to display that image and enjoy it. However, it is not at your disposal to make copies of it by scanning or any other means. It’s actually against the law.

Also, most professional photographers like to maintain quality control over their work. There is a large quality difference between a scanned photo and one that your photographer creates and sizes for use on the web. We do not like to see our work all distorted and wonky because it has been scanned.

Really, what’s the big deal?

The big deal is that your professional photographer works extremely hard at creating the beautiful images that you see. Everything from lighting, posing and post-processing goes into one single image. In that regard, your photographer will price their work to maintain a profitable business. When clients start scanning images and reprinting at home or worse, local one-hour labs, they have basically stolen the ability for the photographer to make a profit from that image. Since selling their artwork is how photographers earn a living, it tends to make us unhappy when clients steal images from us.

BUT Aunt Susie saw my photo and just wants to have one little copy of it. Now what?

Great! Your photographer will be thrilled to help you get one little copy of that photo for Aunt Susie. It’s always a great thing to hear that your family and friends love our work!

Okay, got it. BUT I bought the disc with the printing rights. What can’t I do with these images?

On the print release form, there will be instructions on what you can and cannot do with the images contained on the disc. However, just for the sake of education, I’ll give you a quickie list of those things.

Things you can do:

* make prints for personal use
* make greeting cards for personal use
* make photo books or photo gifts for personal use
* upload the images in the WEB folder onto the web to share with your family and friends (however, please do not remove the watermark and give photo credit by linking the the photographer's website if possible.

Things you cannot do:

* enter the photos into contests – nope, not even those “cute baby” contests
* post full-size non-watermarked images on the web
* alter the images – part of your photography experience with your professional photographer will include the photographer’s time and talent in editing/processing your images. If you do not like the style in which your images were processed, it might be time to look for a different photographer.

What about the images on your blog and facebook?

The images on my blog are meant to be enjoyed and viewed. If you would like to share the images on my blog, please do so. All you have to do is share the link (URL) with your family and friends. Or, you can simply find the share buttons at the right of each post (titled “share this blog”) and share them anywhere you’d like.

The images on facebook are also meant to be enjoyed and viewed. I welcome and encourage you to tag yourself in the images on facebook or share the link to the images. I also welcome and encourage you to use the images on facebook as your profile photo as long as you do not remove the watermark in the cropping process. To avoid removing the watermark, simply drag the cropping bars all the way to the edge of the photo. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

Okay, I admit it. I might have violated your copyright policy. Now what?

Hey, don’t sweat it! We all make mistakes and I’m sure that you did not intend to do so. I simply ask you to make an attempt at rectifying the situation. If you’ve scanned images and posted them on the web, please take them down. If you need a watermarked copy of the images to use on the web, please contact me immediately and we can get that taken care of --- web images are FREE for you to use!

And please, please, please… promise to never do it again! xoxo
